  1. When you ask “what is a mandala?” the main meaning of the word is “circle.” But it is much , much more than just a circle, it is the basis from which all spiritual mandalas are made. It is a wheel within a wheel representing wholeness and the infinity of our universe. Some mandalas are made with specific meaning like Tibetan mandalas that are designed as spiritual windows to enlightenment. These mandalas are sometimes made using colored sand and depict the beautiful imagery of Buddhist deities and symbols.

  2. A mandala is a Sandskrit word meaning “circle”. In the Buddhist and Hindu religions traditions sacred art often takes a mandala form. These mandalas, concentric diagrams, have spiritual and ritual significance in both Buddhism and Hinduism. The term is of Hindu orgin and appears in the Rig Veda (RV) as the name of the sections of the work, but is also used in other Indian religions, particularly Buddhism. In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing attention of aspirants and adepts, as a spritual teaching tool.
