Keep on Earning!

Remember, even though school is over for the year that doesn’t mean that you have to stop learning. And it doesn’t mean that you have to stop earning TAG money either. There will be brain teasers and activities on Edmodo for you to do all summer. All the lessons you complete on Duolingo will continue to earn you money. As will any lessons you finish on Tynker. And anyone who finishes the Programming 101 unit over the summer will earn a BIG bonus. So keep working!

Have a fun and safe summer!

Middle of the End

Welcome to our last week of distance learning!

We will be having out last WebEx meet up this Thursday at 4:00. Just go to my personal WebEx “room” at the appropriate time so we can all catch up and say goodbye for the year.

https://jefcoed.webex.com/meet/cchunn

As many of you know by now, the school has posted times when each grade level’s students may come through the car line and pick up all their work and the things they left in their classroom. I have already cleaned out all the TAG binders and put your things in your progress report envelopes. Those envelopes were added to the things your classroom teachers gathered for you. So you can pick up everything at once.

Next Monday I will post a list of the TAG students in each grade that earned the most money this year. Once we are allowed back to school next year those people can come by my room and pick a prize from the things I had already collected for this year’s auction.

You may continue to do work on Edmodo, Duolingo, and Tynker throughout the summer. Any money you earn over the summer will be added to your balance at the beginning of next year (3rd and 4th grade only, obviously).

Now for …

The Main Event

So the last four weeks, I have been posting videos of myself reading Neil Gaiman’s Fortunately the Milk. In turn, I encouraged you (and posted an assignment) to record yourself reading a favorite story. Well … here are the links to all the videos I received. Everyone who turned in the assignment did an amazing job!

Enjoy!

Congratulations to Alisa Nazarenko, Kahina Laouzai, Seth Jenkins, and Sadie Shinkle! Their FPS team won the State Bowl and will be going to the Virtual FPS International Competition in June.

Beginning of the End

(of the 2019-2020 School Year)

This is the fourth and final installment of Fortunately the Milk by Neil Gaiman!

Fortunately the Milk: Part 4

My next weekly update will collect the links to all of the videos ya’ll have made of yourselves reading. Everyone who has turned in their video so far has done a wonderful job and I can’t wait to share them with you all.

So, this is your last week to record yourself reading. Remember not to make your video longer than 10 minutes or it will have trouble uploading. Upload your video to your school Google Drive account. Then select it and click on the share button in the top right hand side of the screen. The share button looks like a person with a plus symbol next to it. Google just started rolling out updates to this part, so if two boxes pop up, make sure under the words “Get link” that it says “Anyone on the internet with this link can view”. Then click the words “Copy link” in blue on the right side of the box. Paste that link in an email to me. (cchunn@jefcoed.com)

We will be having our next to last WebEx meet up this Thursday @ 4:00 as usual. All you need to do is click on the link (or copy and paste the link into the address bar of your browser) to my personal WebEx “room” below to join.

https://jefcoed.webex.com/meet/cchunn

Also…

I need everyone to go into the TAG 19-20 folder on their school Google Drive account and find their Tynker Preassessment. Click on it once to select it and then click on the share button in the top right hand side of the screen. Type my email address (cchunn@jefcoed.com) into the box under where it says “Share with people and groups”. Then click done.

I have to score those pretests and turn the results in to Jefferson County. It’s part of the grant we got to pay for the Tynker subscriptions. So, PLEASE do that this week.

More Milk & Meetings

Fortunately the Milk Part 3

is here: LINK

I had expected this to be the last installment of the book (as you can tell from the video) but it ended up being as long as the first, much too long, video. So… I split the video in half and this is then next to last installment instead. Part 4 will be out next week.

At the end of the video I invite again each of you to record yourselves reading a favorite short story, poem, or picture book. Upload your video to your school Google Drive account. Then click on the share button on the top right hand side of the screen. (That button looks like a person with a plus sign next to them.) Choose “Get Shareable Link” and copy the link. Email me (cchunn@jefcoed.com) the link and I’ll put together a post of links to everyone’s videos.

Anyone who sends me a link to themselves reading will earn $20 of TAG money.

TAG Meet Up

We will be having our weekly TAG meet up in my personal “room” on WebEx as usual. Same bat time, same bat channel: Thursday at 4:00

https://jefcoed.webex.com/meet/cchunn

Can’t wait to see you there!

Weekly Update

First off, I apologize that this update is arriving a little late. And that it does not include the promised final installment of Neil Gaiman’s Fortunately the Milk. My sixteen year old fur baby, Inari, became very ill last week and passed away over the weekend. So, I’m afraid that you’ll have to wait another week to find out how the dad finally gets the milk home to his kid’s breakfast.

In the meantime, record your own video! Choose a story, picture book, or poem and record yourself reading it. Upload the video onto your Google Drive account. Then choose the share button (looks like a person with a plus symbol) from the top right hand side of the screen and copy the sharable link. Paste the link into an email and send it to me. (cchunn@jefcoed.com)

After all the Fortunately the Milk videos have been posted, I’ll gather all the links and post them here. Then you can watch your friends and classmates read their favorite stories too! (Plus you’ll earn $20 TAG money.)

Also, we will be having our weekly TAG meet up on Webex on Thursday at 4. Just click on the link below to enter my person “room” and join the conversation!

Fortunate Milk & Fun Meetings

First things first!

Here is the second installment of Neil Gaiman’s silly novel Fortunately the Milk.

Fortunately the Milk Part 2

Due to problems uploading the previous video (it was a smidge too big and therefore took FOREVER) this one is just over 10 minutes. But don’t worry, Part 3 will be out next week and finish off the story. I read this part wearing a slightly oversized bowler hat. 😁

At the end of the video I invite each of you to record yourselves reading a favorite short story, poem, or picture book. Just upload your video to your school Google Drive account. Then click on the share button on the top right hand side of the screen. (That button looks like a person with a plus sign next to them.) Choose “Get Shareable Link” and copy the link. Email me the link and I’ll put together a post of links to everyone’s videos on May 4th.

Anyone who sends me a link to themselves reading will earn $20 of TAG money.

TAG & Book Club Meetings

Now, on to our next TAG Webex meet up. Our last one went well and we have scheduled another for Thursday the 23rd from 3:00 – 3:30. This is a change. It was originally supposed to be at 4 but I ended up having another meeting scheduled at that time. So, we’ll meet at 3 instead.

Directly after the TAG meet up, anyone who is part of any of my book clubs is invited to stay on and discuss the books we read. Feel free have a snack ready to eat while we chat.

At our last meet up there were some problems with people not receiving their invitation emails. I’m not sure if that just because so many people were invited or what. But I’ve heard from other TAG teachers that just having students show up to your personal “room” on WebEx works better than sending out invitations. So that’s what we’ll do this time. Here the address of my “room” on WebEx: https://jefcoed.webex.com/meet/cchunn

Stay healthy, everyone! Enjoy making your videos and see you on Thursday!

Bloxels Accounts Released to Parents!

Our 2nd nine weeks is underway and TAG progress reports have been sent home. That means its time to switch classes. Ms. Cantley’s students have begun coming to me to study Video Game Design. And my students have begun going to Ms. Cantley to study Inventions. (All except Ms. Lovett’s 3rd grade class. Due to Ms. Cantley’s schedule, they stay with me all year.) ‌

Since I only purchased a block of 50 student accounts from Bloxels at the beginning of the year, I can not hold on to the accounts of the students who will be with Ms. Cantley for the rest of the year. I have to release those accounts to make room for my new students. Luckily, the students accounts don’t disappear.

Parents may purchase their student’s account for $10 so the student can keep all their hard work and continue learning on this amazing platform. ‌ Just click on this link, put in the student’s username (first Initial, last name, 19 for 3rd grade, 18 for 4th grade, and 17 for 5th grade) (ex. JSmith19) and pin (first four digits of lunch number). Then add an email address and password to the account. And then purchase the account. Easy peasy! ‌

As a bonus, for each student account that’s purchased, our school will receive a FREE student account to use at school!

Computer Science Summer

Just because school is out doesn’t mean the fun of computer science has to end!

Students are welcome to continue working through the Code.org curriculum over the summer. Finish Course 2 and move on to Course 3. All done with Course 3? Great! Then dive into Course 4 and graduate Code.org.

(Ms. Chunn has a list of where everyone finished the year and any progress made over the summer will earn you TAG money when next year starts!)

Can’t remember the web address for your class’ Code.org login page? No problem! You can find a list of links here.

Can’t remember your secret words? Don’t worry! Ms. Chunn sent them to you in a note on Edmodo. (And don’t forget about the brainteasers and activities being assigned on Edmodo during the summer.)

Need even more computer goodness? Never fear!

You can get a free account on Khan Academy and take their computer programming or computer science courses or do the same on CodeAcademy. We’ve been studying Java but that is not the only computer language out there. Try your hand at Ruby (HaketyHack or KidsRuby) or Python.

Or you can learn lots of other computer science skills from Code.org’s other partners. From programming robots to writing apps and games for your phone. You can learn it all here!

Young Scientist Challenge

Want a chance to win $25,000? Want a FREE trip to watch the Discovery Channel tape their shows? Want to spend the summer working one-on-one with a REAL scientist? Then check out Discovery Education’s Young Scientist Challenge!

All you have to do is find a real-world problem, think of a creative and interesting solution, and then make a video showing your idea off. The deadline for entries is April 20th so you’d better get going!

The info for parents is here: Young Scientist Challenge – Parents Info .

Mummy Time

We are beginning our study of Ancient Egypt and will, of course, be covering their mummification process. To help students understand this important ritual, we will be mummifying stuffed animals.

Each student needs to bring a small, cheap stuffed animal in a shoebox, with their name on it, to Ms. Chunn or Ms. Weldon by 2-20-15. (This is an extension on the due date listed on the original note we sent home) They will be stored in the TAG classrooms until the project begins. Please check the blog for updates on when the mummification process is starting. This may be messy and students might want to wear old clothes or bring a smock to class that day.

These stuffed animals will be cut open and mummified in class so it is essential that they have no sentimental value and are inexpensive. As the shoebox will become the mummy’s sarcophagus, it is also important that the stuffed animals fit easily into them.
