AAGC Parent Webinar: March – Executive Function

The Alabama Association of Gifted Children (AAGC) now offers a monthly webinar series for parents of gifted children. Each month they choose a different expert to speak virtually about a topic relevant to the unique challenges of raising gifted children. This is a valuable opportunity and resources that I strongly encourage parents to take as much advantage of as possible. You can register for each month’s webinar at alabamagifted.org.

March 2, 2021 @ 6:30

This month’s speaker is broaching a subject that we are all struggling with right now. Executive functions are a broad group of thinking skills that include things like setting and attaining goals, monitoring your own behavior, and working memory. Having strong executive functioning is essential to problem solving and reasoning.

IB Middle School Applications Open Now!

Attention Parents!

Current 5th graders need to start filling out their applications for Jefferson County’s award winning IB program now. Applications must be turned in by January 28th. It is a multi-step application, requiring recommendations and other paperwork to be filed along with main application. So don’t wait till the last minute. The IB school only takes Jefferson County’s best and brightest. And that should include your student!

Download the application here.

Other information about the IB program in general can be found on the JCIB middle school’s website here and the high school website here.

Ms. Chunn will happily write recommendations for any TAG student wishing to apply. Just bring her the paperwork. She will also be more than happy to answer any questions you might have about the program. You can contact her via email (cchunn@jefcoed.com) or by phone (379-3000).

What is IB?

IB stands for International Baccalaureate. It is an international education certification that allows students who graduate with their diploma, regardless of what country they graduated in, to attend school anywhere in the world. Suffice it to say that JCIB is the most academically rigorous school available to our students. Every student who graduated from the IB high school last year got a college scholarship.

Where is the IB school? For now the middle school is housed on the Pleasant Grove Middle School campus located at 805 7th Avenue, Pleasant Grove, AL 35127. And the high school is housed at Shades Valley High School. The county’s goal within the next three years will be to find a more centrally located site to house both parts of the IB program under one roof.

Will transportation be provided? Yes. I know that Pleasant Grove is a long way away and that this is a concern for many parents. But after speaking to several of the families with students at the middle school this year, they all say that the distance has not an issue after all. Please do not let worry over something that may be a small inconvenience rob your student of this amazing opportunity.

What clubs, athletics and extra-curriculars will be offered? That depends of the campus. IB students participate in the athletics offered by the school who’s campus they are housed on. Middle school students play sports at Pleasant Grove students and high school students play sports at Shades Valley. The IB middle school also offers a Future Problem Solvers Team, Science Olympiad team, debate team, and math team exclusive to their program.

This is an amazing opportunity that no TAG student should pass up!

Weekly Update

First off, I apologize that this update is arriving a little late. And that it does not include the promised final installment of Neil Gaiman’s Fortunately the Milk. My sixteen year old fur baby, Inari, became very ill last week and passed away over the weekend. So, I’m afraid that you’ll have to wait another week to find out how the dad finally gets the milk home to his kid’s breakfast.

In the meantime, record your own video! Choose a story, picture book, or poem and record yourself reading it. Upload the video onto your Google Drive account. Then choose the share button (looks like a person with a plus symbol) from the top right hand side of the screen and copy the sharable link. Paste the link into an email and send it to me. (cchunn@jefcoed.com)

After all the Fortunately the Milk videos have been posted, I’ll gather all the links and post them here. Then you can watch your friends and classmates read their favorite stories too! (Plus you’ll earn $20 TAG money.)

Also, we will be having our weekly TAG meet up on Webex on Thursday at 4. Just click on the link below to enter my person “room” and join the conversation!

News from the Home Front

Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe!

Since we are no longer able to meet in person this school year (stupid COVID-19😷) Ms. Cantley and I have been brainstorming ways that we can still keep in touch.

Webex meetings are definitely one option and we will be holding our first one on Thursday, April 16th at 4:00. This first one will be a bit of an experiment but, assuming y’all like it and everything goes smoothly, we will set up a regular time to meet each week. Please remember that I am just as new to the Webex platform as all of you are, so my ability to help you trouble shoot is VERY limited. Please check your school email for an invitation.

Also, we know that not everyone has the time, wifi, and/or devices to meet on Webex. So we will also be posting something fun here on our classroom website and over on Edmodo each Monday for you to enjoy. Hopefully that will help everyone feel connected! I will try to notify everyone either through email or text when something new is up, just in case you forget.

Here’s your first one! I read the first half-ish of Fortunately the Milk by Neil Gaiman while wearing adorable cat ears. (Its a silly book, so I thought a silly costume would be appropriate.)

Click here to watch the video.

And don’t forget that if you need either of us, you can always reach Ms. Cantley and myself via email or on Edmodo messages during our office hours. We will get back to you ASAP at those times. So feel free to ask any questions you might have or just check in. We can even set up a phone call or private Webex for you if that’s what you need. Our email addresses are cchunn@jefcoed.com and scantley@jefcoed.com.

Office Hours:

Ms. Chunn 3:00 – 6:00 (M-F)

Ms. Cantley 3:00 – 6:00 (M & T)

Beginning-of-the-Year Parent Meeting

This year’s TAG Parent Meeting was held on Friday evening. I want to give a huge thank you to all the parents who came out to learn about our program.

Third Grade Parents Only

The first half of this meeting is always reserved for the parents of our new third grade students. We discussed the Second Grade Child Find process and what all the information that I gathered during it means. Any parent who was unable to attend is welcome to request a copy of their child’s Gifted Eligibility/Screening Dertermination Form (we call it the Matrix). The presentation I used is linked below and should explain the scores listed on the Matrix.

Newsletters

Any third grade parent’s who were unable to attend the meeting, please check your student’s backpack for their TAG newsletter! It talks about the different online learning communities we will be using in TAG this year. At the bottom of the last page is the Student Response Form. This is a contract between you, your student, and the TAG classroom outlining the behaviors we expect while participating in online learning communities. This page needs to be signed and the bottom half returned to school. Students will earn TAG money for turning it in by their next class.

If your child’s newsletter goes missing, you may follow the link below to find the documents that make it up.

All TAG Parents

In the second half of our beginning-of-the-year meeting we explained how our program works and all the little things that make it awesome!

The two most important pieces of information that we covered are this year’s Concept Based Curriculum topics and our continued emphasis on technology. As usual, we will be using both  Edmodo and Google Apps for Education extensively. We also touched on this year’s TAG Schedule, reviewed the money system, and talked about our extra curricular opportunities.

If you missed the meeting, or just want a refresher, you can check out the presentation I used by following the link below.

A Few More Things

A few things that I meant to cover in the meeting but somehow didn’t manage to…

  1. Make Up Work – Any work that is done in class while students are gone to TAG does not have to be made up. Many teachers still give their TAG students a copy of the work so that they know what was covered while they were out, but it does not have to be made up. Any homework assigned for that evening does need to be completed. If tests are given or work is assigned on a long term project while students are away in TAG these, obviously, need to be made up.
  2. Supplies – Instead of asking for supplies to be sent in (although tissues are always appreciated) or requiring that students purchase their own binders and other materials, we ask that each student donate $10 to our program. This allows us to buy specifically what we need when we need it. It also lets us save up money to buy big ticket items, like technology resources, for our students to use. The students will receive TAG money for turning in their donation.

So Proud of Our 5th Grade Scholars!

The 5th Grade Scholars have been announced and I am proud to announce that nine of our TAG students here at Clay are among those being celebrated for their academic excellence. This is a big achievement! I encourage everyone to give them the congratulations they deserve.

Outstanding Work!

3rd Grade Parent Meeting

Tuesday, November 6th

Clay Elementary Cafeteria

4:00 – 5:00 3rd Grade ONLY

All 3rd grade TAG parents need to attend this meeting if at all possible. We will explain the process used to qualify your child for TAG services and go over the information gathered during this process. We will also explain the various tests given and how to interpret your child’s scores. If you have any questions about the testing or the TAG program they may be answered at this time.

At this meeting Ms. Chunn and Ms. Cantley, will present this year’s curriculum, give a general overview of how our program works, and answer any of your questions. We will review and explain the extra-curricular opportunities we have developed for our students and cover topics such as field trips, program changes and our online learning environments.

This meeting is a great chance to find out what your student will be up to in Gifted this year.

We hope everyone can make it!
